The rocks and fossils of the Maritime provinces of Canada tell a fascinating story of the last billion years. This story, discovered by geologists over the last 200 years, has yielded many surprises. In the Maritime provinces we have direct evidence for a geological history stretching back about 1 000 million (or a billion) years. The Earth has changed a lot in the last billion years—continents have moved across the globe, collided, and split apart; oceans have been formed and destroyed; climates have wavered between tropical and frigid; and simple life forms have evolved into multi-celled animals and plants, some of which have colonized the land. The story of these changes is the major focus of this book. |
